Educator, Theater Advocate & Artist
Cecilia Rubino has been a leader in theater education and socially engaged performance for decades. As an educator, director, and writer, she has dedicated her career to integrating theater with civic engagement, human rights issues, and interdisciplinary learning.
Cecilia serves as Associate Professor of Theater at Lang College, The New School, where she has played a pivotal role in shaping the theater program. She has directed the Lang College Theater Program, the First-Year Program, and the Arts in Context Program, overseeing curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and student productions. She teaches courses in acting, directing, Shakespeare, and devised theater, focusing on theater as a tool for community and advocacy.
As a theater-maker, Cecilia’s work explores the re-interrogation of classical drama, the history of acting practice, and interdisciplinary approaches to engaged theater where artists and audiences together grapple with essential and generative questions. Rubino states: "Theater demands that both the maker and the audience engage in the moment and in the imagination. Whether I’m directing a devised piece, a classic play, or working with students at the ‘I HAVE A DREAM’ Theater & Education Afterschool Programs, I continue to be moved by the power of performance to spark dialogue, strengthen communities, and create new possibilities.
